Going Home
Vancouver
We left Lake Nam Ngum in the early morning and headed for the border. It would have been nice to have stayed another day but Felipe had a plane to catch soon.

Here's an excerpt of the email I sent home from Nong Khai:

This morning we got up early and through a large assortment of buses, boats and tuk-tuks returned to the capital of Vientiane and crossed the Mekong river back into Thailand. I'm staying in the town of Nong Khai for the next couple of days, but Felipe is on an overnight train bound for Bangkok as I type this.

I remember feeling a little disturbed finally being on my own after saying goodbye to Felipe. At the same time I was also relieved to be back in Thailand. Nobody in Laos understood my Thai when I tried to speak. Although most Lao people understand simple Thai I think my accent was simply mangling it too much for them.

Nong Khai has some very nice guesthouses and restaurants by the Mekong River. Most people are just there overnight while coming/going from Laos, but I found spending a couple of days there very worthwhile.
